The World Academy of Medical Sciences (WAMS) has launched a program to raise awareness about the negative health consequences of child marriage across the Globe.
Child marriage is a human rights violation, that occurs when one or both parties are married off before the age of 18, and has serious public health implications.
Child marriage increases the risk for psychological problems, cervical cancer, sexually transmitted infection, maternal mortality, and premature birth and neonatal or infant death.
According to SDG 5.3, which has targeted the end child of marriage by 2030, Prof. M. M. Karindas the president of the World Academy of Medical Sciences (WAMS), Shahin Gavanji and Jahangir Gavanji have launched the global program to raise awareness of the health risks of child marriage.
This program started in 2016 to achieve a Sustainable Development Goal of eliminating child marriage around the World.
How this program can prevent child marriage
This campaign is a powerful comprehensive educational program, putting a spotlight on child marriage and raising awareness about it. A related educational brochure tells about the devastating consequences of child marriage on a girl’s health emphasizing the importance and cruciality of preventing child marriage.
In this program, more than 31000 brochure were delivered to people in 31 cities in Iran and helped Iranian people getting them informed in full knowledge of the harmful effects of child marriage on physical and mental health.
The campaign encourages people to read the brochure thoroughly and share it with families and friends.
The goals of this program:
- Raising public awareness and generating public opinion on the negative health concerns related to child marriage.
- Implementing a long term program to prevent child marriage.
- Increasing the minimum age of marriage to 18 through the nations.
- Making all efforts possible to empower girls and women, to improve their social status and integrity within gender equality in all societies across the World.
