Special guest Mark Douglass

Friday
12/09/2011
8pm EST, 5pm PAC

recommended show

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Mark Douglass, abuse survivor, author, speaker and life coach. A retired attorney, Mark was the first male survivor of childhood sexual abuse in our nation to successfully sue for his injuries. In 1988, a civil jury awarded Mark a verdict of over $1,000,000 against the close family friend who molested him. His book, "Flashbacks of Abuse; How a machine gun toting sociopath freed me from the chains of my childhood," is autobiographical. Although Mr Douglass saw numerous therapists in his earlier adulthood, he marks his awakening as following an incident in 2004, when, while traveling in Europe with his twelve-year-old child, they were almost killed as they accidentally stumbled into the middle of a gangland kidnapping. The shock brought on PTSD that eventually helped him review and re-frame his perspective on his life. The narrow brush with death, coupled with the author's growing awareness of his own mortality, proved to be a valuable gift as he worked his way through the pain and confusion of his past with the help of his therapist, a retired police officer. Mark seeks to dispel numerous myths about child abuse, and to teach several truths, among them, that the manner in which a survivor's family responds to abuse plays a critical role in how the incident will affect his recovery. But Brian was unfairly discharged from the service with a diagnosis of his having a "personality disorder." He's still fighting the Veteran's Administration for appropriate treatment for his PTSD, a direct result of his experiencing Military Sexual Trauma (MST). In 2010, there were 19,000 cases of sexual assault reported in the military, resulting in some 3,000 courts martial. Although Brian was subsequently granted disability, he continues to struggle with a frustrating and self-protecting military medical services system. He supports the efforts of Jackie Speier (D-CA, 12 District) who in November 2011 introduced the STOP Act, H.R. 3435, a bill that seeks to revise how the military deals with cases of sexual trauma. The purpose of the law is to inform and protect students from sexual abuse, to mandate school districts implement and educate students on sexual abuse. School boards are instructed to adopt age appropriate curriculum on sexual abuse education to students grades pre-k through 5th grade. As Ms Merryn points out, "Growing up in Illinois public schools every year I was educated with my classmates on tornado drills, fire drills, bus drills, stranger danger, and learned the 8 ways to say "NO" to drugs through D.A.R.E." She continues, "As a child I never had to take cover because of a real tornado. I never had to stop, drop, and roll or run out of a burning building. I never had to evacuate a school bus due to an emergency, but I had the knowledge to know what to do if any of those situations happened. Where was the drill on how to escape a child molester? He had been waiting for the right evening to call us from the other side of the world. Gidon has been in therapy a long time, 26 years, yet the issue of his molestation as an infant had never been addressed. Its not unusual for the mind of a child as young as Gidon was to repress the memories of such experiences. Full 20% of sexually abused kids are younger than 8 years old. Many never tell, others simply don't remember, and sometimes these memories will unexpectedly emerge decades later. We are always grateful when people trust our group enough to share their story with us, especially if its for the first time.

You can't bury that kind of emotion, and it wasn't until I began research on it that I slowly began to understand it, and to work my way through it.” Ms. Heimdale continues, "I felt validated, and I finally understood the psychology behind the mind of the abuse victim — as well as the abuser — and the necessity of freedom from fear for recovery.” (see the web site: www.trianglerockenterprises.weebly.com)

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Hank Estrada -- In his book, UNHOLY COMMUNION, Lessons Learned from Life among Pedophiles, Predators and Priests, Hank Estrada takes us through the horrors of being sexually abused in his family of origin by a trusted uncle only to be followed by a second experience of sexual abuse by a trusted priest during his seminary training in the religious order of the Claretian Missionary Priests and Brothers. Estrada is candid not only about those who abused him but also about his own dark side that emerged as he tried to come to grips with the effects of the abuse and his own sexual orientation. This book is worthy of a careful reading by anyone, but especially by those who have doubts about the effects of sexual abuse of vulnerable young people by members of the clergy or about the systemic pattern of enabling these same abusers to violate additional vulnerable people.
